Qualifications:
- Applicants must be a high school graduate or have GED
- Must have valid driver's license
- First Aid/CPR certification a plus
- Experience working with children/students beneficial
- Experience in a clerical setting beneficial
- Knowledge of braille or willingness to learn
Salary: $16.91-18.45 per hour, starting, depending on experience
$18.45-$20.21 per hour, starting, if bilingual (English/Spanish), depending on experience
Employment: 7.5 hrs per day, 185 days per year (during school year)

Reports To: Teacher of Visually Impaired, Director of Special Education

JOB TITLE: Visually Impaired Program Assistant
REQUIREMENTS:
Education Level:
- High School Diploma or GED. Post secondary training desired
Certification/Licensure:
- Drivers license
- First Aid/CPR certification desired
Experience Desired:
- Working with students, faculty, and staff. Clerical work, computer experience, knowledge of braille or willingness to learn.
Other Requirements:
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Understanding of basic reading and math skills
- Experience in braille and braille transcribing, or a willingness to learn
- Ability to be self-directed and work with indirect and direct supervision
- Flexibility
- Must be able to provide your own, reliable transportation to various schools
REPORTS TO: Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Director of Special Education
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The essential functions of each employee’s position includes (1) regular, dependable in-person attendance on the job; (2) the ability to perform the identified tasks and to possess and utilize the identified knowledge, skills, and abilities and to perform the identified work activities; and (3) the ability to perform the physical requirements on their specific job description.
Basic:
- Assists the supervising teacher in providing adapted materials and instruction to visually impaired students. Abides by the guidelines established for paraeducators of the State of Nebraska and the District.
Frequent:
- Demonstrates the ability and willingness to perform and fulfill assigned duties as designated by the supervising teacher
- Assists the supervising teacher in the collection, modification, and preparation of instructional materials and equipment. Ex: knowledge of equipment use, enlarging material, uncontracted braille and transcribing, reading material on tape or to a student
- Transcribe print materials into braille for students and staff using the appropriate braille code through the use of a braille writer or computerized equipment, embosser and printers.
- Create tactile instructional materials, using Nemeth Braille Code, to support the delivery of Mathematics curriculum
- Develop, proofread, and accurately edit materials in contracted and uncontracted braille form through the use of a braille writer or computerized equipment
- Create adapted curriculum materials in the FPS online Learning Management System, in consultation with the teacher and student, to support the delivery of electronic content that meets the students needs.
- Carry out instructional programs designed by the supervising teacher
- Assists students in performing activities initiated by the supervising teacher
- Manage and regularly update BookShare accounts for students with visual impairments
- Report requests for support and any observed or reported difficulties to supervising teacher
- Provides assistance with individualized programmed materials. Prepares instruction aids, games, and bulletin boards at the discretion of the supervising teacher. Copy, punch, bind, and label materials as needed
- Implements behavior management and modification techniques as structured and monitored by the supervising teacher for individual students
- Assists with various clerical and daily organization duties (maintaining appropriate records for supervising teachers, filing, ordering materials, answering the phone, etc.)
- Attends professional development meetings and workshops for paraeducators (as needed)
- Respects the confidentiality of information about students and communicates progress or concerns about students to parents or staff only with the authorization of the supervising teacher
- Exhibits a positive working relationship with students and staff
- Follows all rules and regulations relating to school and district policies
- Assists in the loading and unloading of students from school vehicles as needed, and supervises students while being transported by district vehicles as assigned
- Performs other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher and/or administrative staff (such as open/close the Sensory Courtyard, welcome guests, tidy up the area after guests leave when volunteers are not present.)
